23 Things Assignment #6

Google Docs

Advantages: Remotely access your document anywhere without having to worry about discs, CDs, or memory sticks.

Disadvantages: You dont have all of the features and options available in the "real" Microsoft software.

I was excited about being able to share PP presentations this way, because the files are so big it is difficult to save, open, & close them on the TPL shared drives. I have to have my PPs on a memory stick. But, I was not impressed by the very limited PPs you are able to create on Google Docs. Very little flexibility for slide designs, no custom animations, slide transitions, etc. But for basic word or excel docs, its not bad.

23 Things Assignment #5

Tagging & Social Bookmarking - del.icio.us

An interesting tool. One good feature is being able to access your favourites list anywhere, at any computer. You could keep track of alot of sites by using your own tags.

The thing about tags is that they can mean different things to different people. Without controlled vocabulary & controlled subject headings, tags are just keywords. I had a hard time deciding if searching del.icio.us using a tag was more or less efficient than a Google search using the same term.

It was fun to click on some of the tags, like "cool", or "fun", and see some of the sites other poeple have tagged. Fun to browse if you're bored.

My News Feeds

I generally dont read news online, because I dont particularly like to read alot of text on computer monitors. It gives me a headache. I get my news on TV in the morning, or by reading newspapers and magazines.

I think subscribing to RSS feeds is an interesting idea, but, honestly, I dont know how often I would actually be checking the site. It seems like one more thing to have to do everyday. Some of the articles were interesting, but none of the information was really essential to my daily life.

I think some people may find Bloglines really useful though.
